Future360 takes an exclusive tour of Masdar City -- a Norman Foster designed high tech, low carbon, sustainable city of the future with a price tag of 20 billion dollars. The city is currently home to students of the Mssdar Institute of Science and Technology -- an offshoot of MIT. First stop is the solar panel farm, where a variety of technologies are being tested for their viability.
While transportation around the city takes place in a fleet electric vehicles, walking is encouraged within the city walls. One of the most interesting things about Masdar is the way traditional architecture blends seamlessly with state of the art modern technology to maximize energy efficiency. The buildings reduce energy demand by 56 percent and potable water demand by 54 percent. This wind tunnel allows people to congregate outside in the hot summer months.
The City will eventually be home to 40,000 people, with another 50,000 commuting each day. But the first residents are the Masdar Institute students and staff who use the campus as their innovation playground -- testing and developing a variety of technologies. The institute’s Knowledge Center offers a place for students to study, while the spherical roof harvests energy from photovoltaics
Future360 were among the first to set foot in the newly unveiled Phase B of Masdar City. Corporations are also looking to call Masdar City home. Seimens will soon be moving into their LEED Platinum Middle East headquarters with GE and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to follow suit.
The final stop on our tour of Masdar City was definitely the most fun. The PRTs, or Personal Rapid Transport vehicles are driverless, carbon free, electric vehicles run by magnetic strips and its here in Masdar City.
