Solar Boat Parade in Amsterdam

Solar Boat Parade in Amsterdam

Future360 explores the 65 miles of canals in Amsterdam which historically served defense purposes, but more recently were the setting for a solar boat parade.

Dozens of solar-powered boats took to the waterways of Amsterdam for the very first time. The parade sought to raise awareness of the threat climate change poses to the Dutch capital's canals and to ensure another 400 years of the canals' existence through the use of sustainable solar and wind energy. The innovative boats were mainly built by university students.

The effort was part of a wider project called "Green Canals". Green Canal is the brainchild of the first Dutch astronaut and also involves rooftop gardens and driving electric scooters. It was hoped that the fleet of solar boats would encourage Amsterdam’s boating aficionados to consider greener alternatives.
